Prison Island (Changuu)

Prison Island (Changuu)

Prison Island — officially named Changuu Island — lies just 5km northwest of Stone Town and makes for one of Zanzibar’s most popular half-day excursions. Despite its ominous name (it was originally intended as a prison, though never used as such), the island is a charming and historically rich destination famous for its colony of giant Aldabra tortoises.

Highlights

Historical colonial-era buildings and ruins
Excellent snorkelling in the surrounding reef
Sandy beach for swimming and relaxing
Yellow-fin tuna and parrotfish in the clear waters
Easy half-day trip from Stone Town — ideal for families
Historical insight into Zanzibar's colonial past
Giant Aldabra tortoises — some over 100 years old, weighing up to 200kg
